Details of Experience:
After suffering a massive stroke, Lorraine Santana was admitted to the Skyline critical care unit where she was on a ventilator and feeding tube for several days. Initially, her survival was not likely. Residual impairments included: severe difficulty swallowing, the inability to express herself verbally, and paralysis with loss of function to her right side. Once medically stabilized, it was essential that she be monitored, assisted with daily activities, and receive intensive skilled therapy. Hence, the reason for her transfer to the Creekside Center for Rehabilitation and Healing.

Upon admission, she was welcomed by team members committed to making her transition as positive as possible. Initially, she was requiring maximum assistance with most activities of daily living and transfers. This was an extremely challenging time for Ms. Santana, especially due to her difficulty speaking and finding the right words. Anticipating her needs and wants was an ongoing objective among the staff caring for her. Goals were set by therapy and a care plan was designed in order to meet her needs and increase her abilities to the highest level of function possible.

After participating in therapy, her swallowing issues no longer exist. Her speech is nearly restored. The resident stated, “I feel like I am getting stronger every day.” At this time, it is recommended that she transfer with supervision. A transfer pole was installed to facilitate maneuvers. Ms. Santana expressed her faith to “get everything back” and how amazed she is to be alive to talk about what she has been through. She is pleased with the progress she has made. Thankfulness was expressed toward the Creekside Center therapists, the nursing staff, her concierge, and her daughter and fiancé, who have played a major role in her recovery and keeping her spirits up. One thing she never lost is her sense of humor. According to her, she uses it every day and believes this has helped her through the most challenging time of her life. Her daughter, Ashli highly complimented the staff for the love and attention given to her mother.

Ms. Santana is enjoying the activities offered, particularly the painting classes, parties, and music entertainment. Socializing and encouraging others are daily occurrences. She is planning to discharge home soon with her family and “two cute dogs”. Cooking and doing household chores are other ambitions she plans to accomplish. She declares, “I will not give up, but keep trying”. The Creekside Center team celebrates the progress she has made thus far and wishes for her every goal to be achieved.
